The LipiFlow thermal pulsation consists of the local application of heat and therapeutic pressure on the four eyelids (upper and lower) in order to improve the drainage of the meibomian glands. These glands are responsible for providing lipids to the tear, that is, the fatty part that prevents its evaporation and makes it of good quality.
The LipiFlow technique is used to treat meibomian gland dysfunction, related to blepharitis (inflammation) of the lower eyelids and dry eyes. In fact, it is the most common reason for dry eye, which is estimated to affect about 85% of patients with this pathology.
Generally, it occurs in elderly people, or in people with hormonal alterations (adolescence and menopause), who wear contact lenses who have abused their use.
The application of the thermal pulsation lasts 12 minutes and is done in consultation under topical anesthesia (drops) to avoid any possible discomfort in the patient.
The LipiFlow system consists of a monitor that shows the treatment parameters, as well as a sterile, single-use piece that is placed over the eye, designed to protect the cornea and equipped with multiple sensors that allow temperature and pressure control supplied.
This piece provides heat (42.5 ºC) to the inside and outside of the eyelids, while they are “massaged” from their external face to release the obstructions of the meibomian glands and enable the secretion of the necessary lipids. to maintain the quality of the tear.
Results are seen in most people after four months of intense pulsed light therapy once a month, although many notice some improvement after the first treatment. Those who suffer from very severe cases of evaporative dry eyes may require maintenance therapy in order to completely overcome the symptoms.
The treatment makes it possible to restore the stability of the tear film and reduce its evaporation, thereby improving the patient's symptoms, as well as inflammation and damage to the ocular surface.
This treatment is more effective than the conventional application of hot compresses on the eyes to take care of eyelid hygiene, although they are not exclusive. In fact, it is necessary to perform daily maintenance at home between sessions, which is usually repeated at 9 or 12 months depending on the severity of the process.
